My original post disappeared, so here I go again: I have seen this design before, but have never been able to figure out how to tie it. Any ideas? Judy

Hi, Judy! Have you tried using 3 forks (or whatever tool you use to spiral)? The man who makes tie-dyed hot air balloons showed me a way to use 4 forks to get a funky 4 spiral design (mine never looked like his, though!). I did, however, use 2 forks to get the tentacles of an octopus (folded the shirt in half, for the head, and to get 4 tentacles altogether), and it looked pretty cool in my opinion.
i hope you figure it out! peace, nicole

There's a band out on the highway. They're high-steppin' into town. They're a rainbow full of sound. It's fireworks, calliopes and clowns -- Everybody's dancing!

I can get the swirls alright, it's tying that has me confused. I have done double swirls on long dresses where I actually ended up with an 's' shape, and tying it was a bear. But three swirls, all going in the same direction, plus blue, is hard for me to picture in my mind.

I am so intrigued with your question that I am testing out my theory. I am taking pics along the way, so if it comes out at all interesting, I will post them. At first I thought that maybe it is just a shirt tripled and then spiralled, but for my experiment, i went back to my original thought of the "3 forks". With this sort of thing, i always get confused as to what color to put in the "middle", but I just sort of went for it this time.
peace, nicole

Awesome, Nicole! I played a little with one fork, removing it and moving to a new swirl, but it was hard to keep the folds in place. I can't wait to see your results!

OK, so I didn't get it exactly (next time would tie it up tighter, maybe use thickened dye or have a lighter hand, I stuck in some blue just to see where it would end up, and also I did the sides opposite -- was trying to get it exactly). But i think it is a start! tell me what you think! nicole

Wonderful Nicole!
Next time you do it, can we get some shots of the process? Then we can put it in the wiki!

Hi, Steve, do you mean like where i put the fork before the pic of the 3 spirals, or what exactly do you mean by the process?
thanks! nicole

I consider the process to be of 3 steps: Folding, tyeing, and dyeing. I think the tyeing is simple enough and has been covered in the spiral fold area. Some guidance (words or pictures) as to how the dye is applied would be helpful! Of course a few shots of the folding would be great!
Thanks! Steve

That's great, Nicole! I have a much better idea of how to do it now! And it would be great to get it on the wiki. I will try to play with this as well, now that you've shown me the way! Thanks, Judy

Well, I got the tying method down alright, but I failed to pay attention to the dye application! Even so, I like the results enough to do some more! I'm calling this "Fireworks"! Judy

Hi! i started dying 2 months ago with a teeny tiny kit from Dharma, with some baby clothes, came out so great, (thanks to reading Paula and watching Tom/Martine/Mike DVDs), I dye every weekend now. I am also struggling with the wet vs. dry; I was just wondering, when this shirt was dyed, was it damp or dry? thnx!
