Judy,

Yes, 4 parts water, 1 part bleach...I spray it on while setting on the grid so it never sits
in the bleach solution. And no, I just submerse it in bleach stop for 5 to 10 minutes.

Well, as promised, I cut pieces from the damaged shirt to do experiments using a 4 to 1 bleach mix, bleach pen, and thickened full-strength bleach.  I am posting the pictures below (hope they're not too big!):

Above is the experiment using the bleach pen

The example on top is thickened, full-strength bleach painted on using a foam brush.  Underneath is the experiment using 4 to 1 and spraying on.  I still haven't found the spray to be very effective in lightening enough for the dyes to show through.
I think the piece I painted on the thickened bleach came out best, but the bleach pen would be good for small, detailed work.  The test will be if I can wash without damage occurring.

I haven't posted any photos before so bear with me....
(Do you think we should move this discussion to "discharge dyeing", just a thought...)

I completed my experiments by testing discharge paste on a piece of the original shirt, and I am pleasantly surprised.  I know discharge paste is only supposed to work well on procion MX or other natural dyes.  But the results I got with this test were better than any of the other methods.

Here is the discharged piece before dyeing.

Here it is after dyeing.  Notice that the colors are brighter -- these are from the same dye batch as the other tests.  The green and blue are especially brighter in the last test.

I have completed discharging and dyeing a shirt using the discharge paste.  First, I will admit that what Paula has always said is true: even 2 shirts of the same brand and color react differentl to the discharge paste.  In this case, I started out thinning the paste a little to try and get it to soak into the fiber.  The first go-round did not lighten it enough, so I tried 2 more times, washing in between the second and third try.  It wasn't as light as my previous experiment, but I decided to try dyeing it anyway.  The design was such that I didn't feel comfortable tieing it, so I simply applied thickened dyes with a sponge applicator.  About half-way through, I realized I had totally forgotten to apply soda ash first!  But I decided to finish anyway, just to see the results.  I covered with plastic and let it set overnight, then washed in synthrapol.  I fully expected that I would get little or no color after washing, but to my amazement, the colors came out great!  Now I'm totally puzzled.  Is my water that alkalai that I don't need soda ash, or does the discharge paste prepare the fiber for dye?  Any ideas?
Here is the result:

Judy, I don't really know but get ye some ph test and see what your water tests at!  My guess is that it will not be stable color and will fade faster than ash set dye.  If you take a tee and dye it without soda ash (generally speaking) you will get a pastel result that won't be very color fast, you will get dyed fabric just not bright fabric and they will fade.  The shirt does look very nice, let us know how it holds up to washing!

Thanks for the input, Alice.  Where would I get a ph test kit?  The water company?  I have a theory as to why the colors came out as bright as they did.  I'm thinking that the discharge paste scoured the fabric and left it better able to bond with the dyes.  I may call Jacquard to see if they have any suggestions as to why I got the results I did.  Will keep you posted.

I was afraid you would say that... here in Flagstaff, we don't have a lot of pools(too cold!).  I will check the hardware store first...

I know that you can order it from dharma, prochem has it too (under workroom supplies).  If you have a good aquarium store in town they probably have it too.
