Hi there, frequent lurker, first time poster *g* My husband had an interesting thought and while I plan on giving it a try, I thought I might ask to see if anyone knew the answer. I'm planning a tie dye party for my daughter's birthday, thought it would be a little more fun than handing out goody bags filled with candy and cheap toys. Anyways, his thought was this: if you added the Procion dye powder to bubble blowing mixture could you use it to blow dye bubbles onto the fabric? Or would the soapiness of the bubble stuff prevent the dye from taking? I kinda think the bubble stuff will make it not work, but i have enough dyes and cotton blanks around to try it anyways. And if anyone has any suggestions on different things to try for this party, i'm all for it. thanks!

Synthrapol is very bubbly and doesn't seem to hurt the dye process. I'm not sure you'd want to mix dyes, kids and bubbles though. I'm just seeing a huge mess with the bubbles, and it might be hazardous to see it flying everywhere. Try it yourself beforehand and see what happens. I can only imagine a big dye bubble popping in someone's face. On the other hand, the bubbles might make some interesting designs!

I'd avoid that use. Kids will end up ingesting dye and while the stuff is pretty safe the warnings indicate that care should be taken in some respects. In particular warnings that point to not using tools also used in food prep, not smoking while handling dye, not getting it in eyes, these things lead me to be wary of your soap bubble idea.

well, yeah, i come equipped with safety goggles, masks, gloves and aprons. and only tie dye outdoors. and only one at a time with bubbles, if i try it at all. plus i would use a bubble blower, not exhaling. mostly i'm interested in what the design might be, though i'm not sure it would work. thanks for the input!

If you really insist on going ahead with your idea, Take into consideration how old are the kids you want to invite, how many kids will be there, are they all excellent listeners, how much help will you have. How much of a sense of humor do the kids parents have when they come home looking like a rainbow for the next week or to. What will you do if it is windy. Don't forget the dye needs to sit for hours before washing so they won't be going home with the shirts. What if they don't turn out well, what if only one kids doesn't turn out well. For my daughters fifth birthday, we used fabric markers and decorated small cotton bags. We had a pinata and then used the decorated bags, that was the party favor. To this day, five years later I still see the bags being used for all sorts of different things. Another suggestion is canvas pencil cases or coin purses. Its cleaner, neater and less stressful. I enjoyed her birthday party and we dyed the tshirts in small groups during play dates. Under a calmer and more controlled environment. For younger kids I use bingo bottles for the dye. They will get dye on themselves no matter how careful you are, we go to the beach after and the water and sand helped remove most of the dye. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

hey "g", didn't mean to be insulting, it's just that sometimes people don't think of these things and so I thought it important to mention. Good luck with the party whichever way you approach it.

no no, i am not insulted at all! mostly i was wondering if it would work, which i'm not entirely sure. and before taking on a group of kids, i would test run it myself first. but would it even be worth a test run? i don't know. and still am not sure. but they are 10 year olds, so better listeners. and we're doing a slumber party and will be letting parents know ahead of time that we are going to be playing with color. small group, 6 kids. and i found a place that sells blank fabric markers to make our own dye pens so its not like we won't have options. using bubbles as a carrier is more of a curiosity than something i would take on with a group of kids without a lot of thought and as i said earlier, not without a test run. i night be a little crazy but not in an irresponsible way. *g*
