I am looking for a source for a black cotton short sleeve long dress.  Any ideas?  No, I don't want to vat dye it myself, 'cause I don't have  time to experiment with vat dyeing, and the dresses are usually too expensive to experiment on anyway.  Soooo.... if you know of any suppliers, let me know, 'kay?

Thanks,

Judy

Dharma was my first stop... they only have a spaghetti strap dress in black cotton, and my client wants short sleeves (something about droopy arms!).  I actually sent her there to view what was available in black.  Oh, well...

well darn.

The catalogues seem to come more and more rapidly (or is it the passage of time?) I thought the huge spread of black dresses (I KNOW they had tons of options at some point) was not too long ago.

Oh, they have a whole page of black rayon on p. 113, and if one of them was short-sleeved, I would suggest it to my client, but they are all sleeveless.  She's pretty particular about the style of garment, so the search is still on!

I love their clothing, and have ordered from them before.  But my understanding is that they no longer sell in small quantities.  If anyone has heard differently, let me know!

Thanks!  I forwarded the link on to my customer to see what she thinks, and have added the site to my sources for future browsing!

Interesting!  If I end up buying the dress (which I just might do at that price!) I will let you all know how the fiber reacts to discharge paste!

It's possible that the dye in that black dress will not discharge at all, as frequently happens with commercially dyed garments. If what you want is a dischargeable dress, there is often no choice but to dye it yourself and then discharge it.

I think that the Dharma black dresses at one point were described as discharging to a rich coffee brown. Against a black background, coffee brown would be awfully subtle.

Hi, Paula.
My plan was to use discharge paste instead of bleach or Thiourea dioxide... I have had good luck so far with the discharge paste on commercially dyed garments.  However, if I don't have any luck finding a black dress, then I guess the next option is vat dyeing.  I just can't face the washing machine with all those resets!  I have dyed large quantities of fabric (4-5 yards at once) in a tub, and was satisfied with the outcome.  I can't imagine it would be different dyeing one dress, even though it will be black.  So if I do that, I may try the Thiourea dioxide.  And if I do, will I need to use the Sodium Thiosulfate Crystals to neutralize the bleaching agent?  Still learning...

Discharge paste produces the same active ingredient that thiourea dioxide does, sulfur dioxide, so they should be similar in what color they produce. I hope it works out well! It's certainly worth trying. I'm glad you've had such good experiences so far.

You don't need to do anything to neutralize any of the sulfur-dioxide-based discharge agents. The sulfur dioxide will wash out, or disperse in the air. Only chlorine bleach (hypochlorite) needs to be neutralized. (I've been working on a page about how to neutralize chlorine bleach - see link - it needs a little polishing but is mostly ready to go.)

I wouldn't like to solid-color dye in a tub. All that stirring! I've used a five-gallon bucket, and each time got pretty tired of it before I was done. I like using the washing machine for dyeing solid colors. I dyed a set of nice cotton sateen sheets for our bedroom when I couldn't find a color I liked, using cerulean blue, turquoise, and lemon yellow MX dyes. It matches the aqua wall paint very nicely. The only problem was that I threw in a silk pillowcase at the same time. Unsurprisingly, it turned out green, rather than the aqua of the cotton sheets.

I went on their website (alegre fashions) and asked for a password to see their price list.  When it came today, I looked at their knit dresses and it seems that there is a price for just one.  I don't know about a minimum order, though.  It probably wouldn't hurt to call them. 1-800-835-6487.  The message I got stated that the economy has hurt their business.  Maybe now they have to be more flexible.  I love their clothes, but I'm not ready to order yet.  I'm swamped with too many projects.
