I'm in the process of installing a new wiki at this moment. I don't see any way to migrate the data from one to the other, but I will continue to look.

There is no real admin backend last I checked so the config file has to be downloaded and text edited, then uploaded. We'll see how fast I can get it functioning.

The next step will be registering and migrating the data over. It may have to be copy and paste. I haven't looked over the differences in mark-up language yet either.

Once I have it worked out, anyone is welcome to lend a hand migrating the data.

Stay tuned,

Steve

A bump in the road. Mediawiki requires php5 and our server here is running php4.

A cursory look at the software running on this server shows that everything should work fine with php5. I am consulting another discussion forum to check out the ramifications of such an upgrade.

Once I am assured that it is no big deal, I should be able to do so quickly with only a brief hiccough in access to this forum and other sites residing on this server.

Steve--I'm so glad you do this forum!  I know you claim to be sort of new to all the necessary code, but it sounds like you know what you're doing.  As far as I'm concerned, it's Greek!  Good luck, hope the frustrations are few.   cool

Okay--resolved PHP5 issue and the server is configured properly to install MediaWiki. Unfortunately, today is a farmers' market day so I will be unable to make the installation and configuration.

It will be done over this weekend. When it is ready, I will give out the directory and you will be able to register.

All will have to reregister--sorry. Kind and knowledgeable volunteers are welcome to help migrate the data. It looks like copy and paste. Some modification may have to be made to links as I seem to recall that the syntax is slightly different. Images may also be an issue. I may have to transfer them via ftp and create new links. There will be bumps in the road--I promise.

Please refrain from adding new stuff until the old wiki information has been reconstructed. Honestly, the old wiki is not that big so it shouldn't take too long to accomplish.

Once migration is complete, I will set up redirects to the new wiki, so when you point to tie-dyewiki.com, you will be directed to the new wiki. The old wiki will remain in place for a few weeks until I can be sure that all is well with the new wiki. After that, the old wiki will be deleted for security reasons.

Stay tuned!

Okay--the new wiki is installed, but it still needs configuration. Configuration is not through an admin back-end as it is with most of my websites--rather it involves editing php files and adding snippets of code. Not as bad as it sounds as in most cases I have to simply copy and paste the desired snippets to the correct files.

I plan to make it a registered only for editing.

The markup is significantly different. I need to get a copy of the markup guide and run the existing text through a word processor using find/replace for commonly found markup syntax. Next a manual cleanup of some less common markup. Finally, images will have to be reinserted.

Capable volunteers are welcome to contact me!

Okay--here it is. I just formatted the first page.

You will find the new wiki at:

http://tie-dyewiki.com/wikinew

You may register. You may also help format pages to the new wiki markup. Here is a page with guidelines:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext_examples

Please contact me so we can coordinate our work. This is a team effort folks!

I ask that you refrain from putting in new materials until we have transferred that which exists.

Here are some guidelines for those who want to help out (Don't all jump up at once) that I sent to Judy (Thanks Judy!)

Go to the old wiki and log in. Find a page you want to transfer. Click the edit button and copy the marked up text. Paste the text into a word processor.

Use the find/replace function (under the edit menu) and:

Find (( Replace with [[
Find )) Replace with ]]

Then go and take words that are headings like this:

!!!word and change it to ===word===
!!word and change to ==word==
etc.

An image tag like:

{img src="img/wiki_up/CIMG1722.jpg" height="120" width="100"}

is changed to:

This can be done, at least in part with find/replace as well.

Feel free to do any pages without illustrations. A lot of the pages with multiple illustrations require not only changed tags, but formatting into tables. Furthermore the images must be downloded the uploaded to the new wiki. The could be right clicked to your computer then uploaded, but I am not sure how you would feel about doing all that. Don't get too hung up on formatting. I can straighten it out.

Like I said, start with the simple. I will continue by doing the most complex pages. You can also explore what I have done by hitting the edit button for any page I have completed to see examples.

I really like the look and feel of the new wiki and the markup language is less convoluted. The thing that kept me from it before was the lack of an administrative backend (it's basically all done by editing code) and few formatting buttons.

I'm unable to register for (thus unable to log in to) the old wiki.  But I'd love to help.  I was able to do one teensy little page anyway, simply because it had no formatting.  Is it still possible to register for the old wiki somehow, or has that ship sailed?

If it isn't possible, Steve, if you want to copy a good long page of (old) text into an email and send it to me, I'd be delighted to format it.  When I finish I'll request another one.  This might also work for others who couldn't register for the old wiki.  Awaiting your assignment... Smiley

Check your messages!

Judy is working on it too. I'll take care of the pages with lots of pictures, then cleanup.

Allso--look for the talk tab if you want to discuss what you are doing with a page or to discuss any changes you might want to make.

Look at the formatting on How to Make a Tie-dyed Shirt and Spiral Fold pages to see what I have in mind for formatting.

As far as I'm concerned, the New Tie-dye Wiki is far enough along to open up.

Come and check it out.

http://tie-dyewiki.com now points to the new wiki.

You may visit the old wiki:

http://tie-dyewiki.com/wiki

for a couple weeks before I delete it. I am doing so to reduce security risks. In the world of web software, crackers find exploits that are patched regularly and quickly. It is not wise to leave old software up as it can become a target of exploits.

Thanks to Judy and Jeau for their assistance!

There are still a few rough edges and a few details not quite worked out--like a few funny little thinks with sruch/chaos links nd formatting the last few photo intensive fold tutorials.

I need to read up a little more to get these things ironed out.

I invite everyone to register. Look at the articles, add or help out where you can by hitting the eidt tab.

There is another tab for each article--discussion. This is a great place to discuss opinions of what needs to be done with the page.

Thanks again!
