I posted here but I guess I should have read more in other sections.
I have tie dyed clothing before but it was with RIT dye. I didn't realize how much there is to learn to get more professional results. From reading these forums I was introduced to the Dharma Trading Company. I purchased a whole bunch of supplies and was eager to start projects.
Paula Burch has some wonderful ideas and a great website. Thank you Paula  wink
I absolutely fell in love with dancingbarefoot's designs. Was trying to figure out how to do mandalas.
I'm hoping all of you can help me out.
I am including two pictures of my first true tie dye projects. I obviously am having control issues with spreading of colors. I would like more crisp lines.
I didn't know anything about folds for a mandala so I penciled the design on the t-shirt, then I outlined the mandala with blue elmer's glue and let dry. I then handpainted the colors on but they ran. I will admit I like the way the glue seperated lines. I'm not ready to batik.
How can I control the spreading of colors.
Also I stitched my peace sign, which I kind of like but same with that one. Colors ran out and I also made a small tear in the design.
Can you give me some pointers in how I can refine? I would appreciate it tremendously as I'm making these for fellow yogis.

This might not be very helpful, but you could dye the rest of the shirt so that the dye spreading would blend in with a color background. Marg

Try checking this thread for how to tie a star mandala. http://itiedye.com/smf/index.php?topic=64.0

If you want to do a "lotus blossom" type mandala, just tie the diagonals in a zig-zag pattern instead of having the diagonals all slanted the same direction.

Thank you Michelle and Marg. I am going to work on the folds this week when the children return back to school. I am also going to work on dying the background, I'm just not sure of the color I should use to compliment the design.
Check out this shirt. I want to do this.
First, does anyone know where I can purchase blank shirts like this (with flare bella sleeves)?
AND.........is this a double ortriple process? Do you tie, resist first? Die base color then add other colors? Do you have to rinse firstcolors then add other colors 24 hours later.
