Hello everyone, I am new here! I have always loved tie dyed items and now that I am learning the different folds and such, I can't wait to do some of my own! I have done some with RIT dye, and some with Kool-Aid but I am yearning to to do some REAL dyeing.... Got any tips for a newbie on how to start?
Thanks, this forum is awesome!

Welcome, Tina!  This forum is a terriffic resource for anyone who likes to dye fabric or clothing!  And I recommend you get a tie-dye starter kit to begin with.  Michael's has them, or you can get one thru Dharma Trading Co www.dharmatrading.com.  That's how I got started 10 years ago.  They give you dyes in the primary colors, instructions on how to mix and use the dye, squeeze bottles to apply with... great way to start.  They are also one of the best sources for dyes, fabric paints and clothing blanks.  Also, for learning patterns, we have the Tie-Dye Wiki right here with lots of good basic tie-dye patterns.  So have fun and let us know how you're doing!

I remember when my curiosity was first peaked,
I checked out videotapes from the library and eventually
bought a few of my own...I needed that visual input.

Welcome,

Jo

Another thing to do now, while you're starting out, is request catalogs from the major dye suppliers such as Dharma Trading Company and PRO Chemical & Dye. Although they have good web sites, having a catalog in front of you is better for finding out about categories of items you don't yet know that you need. Here's a link to a list of different dye suppliers around the world.

Check out the overview of different dye types, the instructions for different types of dyeing, and the hand dyeing FAQ on my site.
