Elin Noble discusses two primary palettes in her book Dyes and Paints. The first is the jewel palette which we are probably most familiar with: Red MX-8B, Yellow MX-8G, Turquoise MX-G. She also includes Blue MX-G.

The other palette she discusses is an Earth palette with Red MX-5B, Yellow MX-3RA, Blue MX 2G. Again she includes Blue MX-G.

I think the latter palette is a great jumping off point for beginners seeking to broaden their repertoire. You certainly get a vastly different variety of colors by altering the set of primaries!
