OK, before this morning I was a complete "rayon virgin."  grin

It's not yet been washed out, just rinsed and hanging to dry, but I think considering that I was asked for a dark brown background to an earth/globe off-center going around the skirt, I think this is (so far, knocking wood vigorously) coming out pretty nicely!

Tie-dye delicates load tonight, with ever-so-careful handling of the rayon; it's in there with an all-cotton skirt from India that I'd rather not come completely undone and lose all its sequins. Smiley Then hopefully a picture of the final product tomorrow.

Couldn't've done it without you! smiley

Gah! Can't get it small enough to post!!!!

You can always check out my Etsy store; it's reserved for another Etsy seller who ordered it. I had to re-work it twice, but it was quite the learning experience. smiley

Now, to do another one!!!!!  cheesy cheesy cheesy

For the first go-round I used the blue and green in squirt bottles within the tied-off globe area to make continents, but the green wasn't dark enough to contrast with the blue, soooo......

I tried using a brush to paint on some dye already mixed with soda ash on damp fabric. Turned out looking pretty much the same as it had befor eI painted it on, soooo.....

....what I ended up doing was putting some deeper green and soda ash into a small sprayer and spraying it right onto the skirt where I wanted the landforms and batching and washing out as usual. BOY was I relieved when it came out that way!

I debated whether to do it with damp or dry fabric, but I elected to use dry fabric so as the dye spread it would end with more demarcation to get the contrast the buyer wanted. Up close on a T-shirt I'm not sure I would have have cared for that effect but on a loosely hanging skirt which would be seen from more of a distance, it seemed to make more sense, so I bit the bullet and gave it a go.

Have I mentioned how much fun it is making wearable usable art?  cool cheesy

I applaud your determination -- and your willingness to experiment.  The end result looks great -- I hope the customer is (finally) pleased!

Heehe! The buyer bought it, so now you have to look in "Sold."

Let's see if I can put a link here: http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=9753761

See if that helps!

She said she liked it a lot, so I guess that's a good sign. smiley As far as willingness to experiment,  it's hard for me to get past doing it "THE right way" vs "the wrong way," but I'm getting there.  cool

oh nice! Love the skirt.

Tell ya the truth, I am finally in a position to experiment a little and it's a blast for me.  I've been pumping out dyes lately and it's good in terms of the financial end of this "job" but I've been jonesing for the time to have freedom with the goods.

Rayon is a cellulose fiber so you would use a fiber reactive dye, like procion mx,  to dye it.
And if you are using fiber reactive dyes, you will have to use soda ash as the "fixer".
Dye rayon like you dye cotton.
