Hello all.  I'm Hippy Dippy, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I've been into tie-dye for a few years now.  Started with a shirt for my son (used that supermarket dye  shocked)

Then I bought a Jaquard kit, and moved on from there.  Tons of fun!

I wonder if there's anyone here whose fascination with chemistry didn't start with a failed RIT dye experiment corrected by Paula! Not meaning to slather on the praise (although I think you deserve it Paula!) but thast's when all the stuff from HS chemistry actually started to make some sens eto me! (And I won't tell you how long ago HS chemistry was for me!  tongue shocked cheesy)

Hah!  I was just telling someone the other day I should have taken chemistry in HS!  And I never got up the courage to try RIT dye... Dharma's starter kit sucked me in, and I haven't been the same since!  And I'll 'fess up... HS was in the '60's!  But I didn't start tie-dyeing until '98... I'm a slow learner... wink

You were lucky to start out with quality ingredients, Judy! I used a variety of dyes until my mom sent me an Earth Guild catalog with Procion MX dyes, saying she thought I might be interested in it. The Rit and the Deka L were better than nothing, but nowhere near as good as fiber reactives.

It's been a lot of fun sharing useful chemistry information with other dyers.

thanks for the welcome, all.

My avatar is a bandana in the "Nebula Spiral" pattern from tyhe "Tye Dye 101" DVD.

I made my son a shirt in that same pattern.  Here it is:
