I've done this for a online friend that is looking to cover his studio wall.
The sheet ended up 12 feet wide and 8 feet 10 inches high.
I used Economy Muslin 108" from Dharma http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/841203-AA.shtml

Folding it into quarters made it easier to handle fabric of this size

How excellent is that! I just love large scale projects; there's so much more room to showcase your talent on a large piece.

I've used the scenery muslin and it was a bit thick to handle, besides the fact that a tapestry this size gets really heavy to hang. It looks like the economy weight worked like a charm for you.

Of course, we want to see more! (whatever happened to the gallery?)

Hey MustDye,
That's a wonderful amazing piece of cloth.
I have a favor to ask..........Next time you do something like that, could you take a picture of the completed tie and show us?
Could you tell us how long it took you to tie it and what you used to tie it with.
How long does it take you to dye it and how long did you batch it and where do you wash out - in your washing machine?
Do you apply the dye with squirt bottles?
Do you soda soak before you tie, or after, or is the soda ash in the dye mix?
Do you tie wet or dry?
I'm impressed!

Could you tell us how long it took you to tie it and what you used to tie it with.

It didn't take all that long to tie. The hassle is getting it squared up and trimmed and folding it into quarters.
I used artificial sinew to tie it.

How long does it take you to dye it and how long did you batch it and where do you wash out - in your washing machine?

I'd guess maybe 1/2 and hour to dye it. I batched it in my greenhouse at 100 degrees.
I think I finished it at 3pm and turned on the heater.
Margaret turned off the heater at 7am the next day and I washed it out around 3pm when I got home.
My basement is 52 degrees so i'm sure it didn't take long to cool down.

I used my GE washer to wash it.
I fill the tank with cold water and let it agitate for a minute and then I drain it. I repeat that step again but I do not let it spin either time.
I then fill it with hot water and put it on for a 15 minute soak cycle before the main washing cycle.
My hot water heater won't give up more than 130 degrees F.
I rent for now so there's nothing I can do about it.
After the hot wash/cold rinse I wash it again in cold/cold and then toss it into the dryer.

Do you apply the dye with squirt bottles?
Yes, I use...bottles with the long curved tip. Paula used the proper name for them in a thread where I posted a picture of them.

Do you soda soak before you tie, or after, or is the soda ash in the dye mix?
I soda soak after I tie. I check the soak with ph paper.
I then use the spin setting on the washer to remove most of the liquid.
I dye it wet(damp) I haven't been happy with anything I've dyed that was dry.

Do you tie wet or dry?
I tie it wet.
I do the same thing as when I dye.
I wash the fabric and let the spin cycle remove excess moisture.

Here's some pictures...

The sheet folded in half lengthwise.

Still folded into quarters...the center of the fabric is the top right corner.

Oh ThankYou MustDye!
For showing the process!
Did you do another one, or do you document like that always?
I think it is useful to show the process occasionally on this forum, as there are different ways to proceed in tiedye.

Thanks again so much!
k. taltre
PS: I'm trying to document better, because I finally got a wee camera that takes AA batteries so I can carry it about and snap stuff.

I had taken the pictures for the person I made the dye for.
On the message board that we both post on I slowly posted the photos to tease him  grin

Make sure you get some rechargeable batteries for that camera of yours.
The fast chargers are bad for the batteries.

Hi MustDye,
Oh good for you, teasing your client with pics.
I did my research on the camera and the batteries and the charger, so I'm cool - decent camera for the price, nimh batteries and a duracell charger that charges slowly and will charge only one battery at a time if one needs that. woohoo
And thanks once again for the documentation of the tapestry! I like the process as much as the finished product, tiedye wise.

Do you see the finished piece in your minds eye before you fold & dye?

I just got back from putting it in the mail...it's going to live near Pasadena, CA

Do you see the finished piece in your minds eye before you fold & dye?

Jo

Sometimes it's planned out...I've even gone as far as sketching out the design.
I do "look" at dyes in my head...

In this case I winged it...lol
Sometimes too much planning can ruin a good thing.

I knew what the accordion fold lines would do but I don't think I've ever done two of them like that.
I know that I'll be doing it again
The center was just a whim...I thought it would look cool and give a point of focus.
What really excites me is the two lines on the left and right center that point at the middle.
Those were just done for fun.

In looking at it under the influence of a bourbon barrel aged ale I think that it is the engine that drives the universe.

As far as the color goes I knew what colors I was going to use for the buyer requested it but I made it up as I dyed.

I have a strong desire to buy more fabric  grin

Hi Eric,

Thanks for sharing your thought process (and your photos, they're great)
I'll have to try something that big sometime.
