Well, I finally got it done! I just posted a how-to video on my blog, http://hippiewear.blogspot.com/2010/05/bamboo-pattern-video-is-here.html demonstrating how to create the 'bamboo' pattern I posted about in March. Definitely not a Hollywood production, but I'm hoping it will be helpful to anyone trying for that look. Let me know what you think if you get a chance to view it, okay? Thanks! Judy

Thank you for the bamboo tie video, Judy. How dry was the shirt you were working on in the video? Totally dry? Dry on the outside, damp on the inside? And did you use Superclear in your dye mix in the video? I would have liked to see the actual tie in a close up, but your video is quite informative. Thanks! k. taltre

Hi, k! The shirt was dampened in the sink prior to folding. As I tied it, some moisture was dripping out... I usually don't have it that damp... just enough so that the two layers stay together and will remain together if I let go. I did not use Superclear or sodium alginate... just dye and water. After I did the segment on folding and tying, I realized the skylight was letting in a lot more light than I realized, and I was away from the camera. That is why in the next segment where I was getting ready to dye, I held the tied shirt up to the camera so I could show the tied garment a little better. It is a little awkward to fold, but I think if I do another one of these, I'll get better at demonstrating! Thanks for your feedback, Judy

I enjoyed watching the video. The strong point was your voice, getting to hear you talk, nice clear explanations. I was frustrated by not being able to see much. The later parts of the video had the camera aimed better, more close-up; in the first part, too much of the unneeded background was showing, so the interesting parts were too small to see. It's a good start and I hope to see more.

Thanks, Paula & Jo. I agree that the first segment was less satisfactory, and you made a good point Paula. I keep hinting to my hubby that it would be great if he would operate the camera, but so far I'm on my own with the remote! Next time I may just do the whole process in the dyeing area with the camera on shorter legs like I did in the dye segment of this one. And yeah, Bubba had to get in camera range... such a cutie!

That was neat! Very informative too. Now I get what I've been doing wrong. I had contemplated doing it with a thickener to avoid the bleed-out, but apparently it's the quantity from the squeeze bottles that's been my problem. If only my "good" versions looked as good as your "what I didn't want" versions!

Thanks, Deb. And trust me, I have my share of 'oops!' shirts! Even after doing this for awhile, I can still goof up a shirt without much effort! But I do think my results are becoming more consistent as I go along, so hang in there! The more we do, the better our chances of getting it the way we want it! Judy

Hi, Judy. I just finished your video on the bamboo dye. I am new to dying and have much to learn through experience so my common sense level is at a minimum. When you applied the eggplant dye to the fabric was it in powder form?? I didn't think that was a common way to use it, but the dish that you had the dye in made me question it.
Thanks! -Whit

Good question! No, all dyes I use have been mixed with water. I re-use containers such as butter tubs, large yogurt containers, spaghetti sauce jars, etc., to mix and store my dyes. BTW, as a new dyer you have landed at a fabulous information source here! I have been dyeing for over 12 years, but my understanding and knowledge has grown a lot since I became a member of iTieDye... happy dyeing! Judy

Hi, Jaja! Yes, I do plan to do some more demo videos as time permits. I am posting them on my blog, hippiewear.blogspot.com, as I finish them. The next one will be how to do 'novas', then I hope to do some low water immersion, stitched designs, the swirl (even though the world probably knows how to do that one!) and whatever else comes to mind. I'll keep you posted when I have the next one ready. Judy

Wonderful video Judy. This is a great resource.
I understand the wrapping was irregular but I was wondering if you did a lot of criss crossing and overlap with the sinew or if you stuck to a linear course down the shirt.
I did my first LWI for the underdye and I'm ready to go. I can't wait!
Thanks again,
Diana

Hi, Diana. I'm really glad you liked the demo! As for the wrapping, I recall trying to keep the sinew more linear, but would definitely encourage you to try both ways just to see the difference in your results. And post pictures when you are done, okay? Judy

Well, I've kinda got it. As you can see the pattern only worked on part of the shirt. I was concentrating so hard on wrapping tightly that I think I covered up some of my pleats and they didn't get dyed. Back to the drawing board.
