My rule of thumb is 2 tsp dye powder for 8 oz water.  That gives me a good medium strength color.  There are  exceptions... for instance, if I use Dharma's Fuchsia, I use 1 tsp dye powder for 8 oz... fuchsia is very strong, and doesn't need as much.  I also refer to Dharma's *'s on their containers to let me know if I need to add more than normal.  Examples are Turquoise, any of the blacks, and a lot of their darker colors.

I wrote a whole page on  How much Procion MX dye should I use? for my Hand Dyeing FAQ, but it probably includes more information than you need.

OMG! I am soooo glad that I have read these posts!  I wondered about the fushia and its consistency.  I always used 2 tbl spoons and felt that it was too thick.  I assumed that it was a reaction with the kelp so I have used less thickener with it.  Now I know to use less dye.
Any other colors that this pertains to?
