I just found this forum a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it! Kudos Steve! I'm from Mars, PA. but have since moved to a small city nearby- Butler, PA. I started tie dyeing with an "ex" girlfriend five years ago to try getting her involved with a hobby. Turned out it was me who really enjoyed the craft! I'm lucky to have a local merchant in Butler who sells tie dyes and has encouraged me to supply him with shirts for his patrons. He's sold some shirts I feel were just down right awful! One thing I've discovered is there really is a land for misfit tie dyes- somebody will like just about any shirt, even the ones I'm ashamed of. I learned a lot from true tie dyes' dvds and whatever information I could find online. I found a lot of tie dyers on myspace but most of them were very tight lipped about techniques, one of the reasons I so very much enjoy this site is the willingness to share information. A lot of you are way more knowledgeable than I am about dyeing but it seems we all have some little trick to offer, if you see something I've done and want to know how I did it just ask. I'll do my best to share what tricks I've learned. PEACE!

Welcome, brixter.  You are so right about a land for misfit tie-dyes. I'm often amazed at the things that sell at festivals -- things I was hesitant to admit I had dyed.
I love this site, too -- everyone is always very helpful.

Love the things you've done Brixter! Welcome!

Years ago I added the line to my avatar...."Someone will love it."
People still surprise me.....but I have a bargain basket for things
I'm too embarrassed to sell at full price.

Lol...I put lots of things on a bargain rack too! One thing I have a very hard time determining is prices. Like I've stated before I consider my tie dyeing still to be very much a work in progress.....and I want these dyes to be affordable, but I think I need to adjust my prices somewhat. Do you price things higher for dyes that take more time?

I definitely adjust my prices for items that take longer.  For instance, I may charge $18.00 for a scrunch-dyed t-shirt, and $22.00 for one where I have done a hand-stitched pattern.  But I started out charging $8.00 per t-shirt when I began dyeing in 1997, because I was just learning what to do, and didn't feel I could ask a lot then.  As I got better at my craft, I felt I could charge a little more.  And I also do mark-downs if I have had items in my stock for awhile, and want to reduce my inventory.

I too charge more for patterns and techniques that are more involved and are bigger!
I also have a Signature Series of tees that are more unique to me that I charge a bit
more for. I definitely make more off the tees than I do off other items I sell in my booth.
