Has anyone found a good brand for adult tights?  I've tried and failed three times. I think they've had too much lycra in them or something...they don't hold the color.  I've found 100% cotton tights for babies but not for adults. If anyone knows where I can get them please let me know.  Thanks~

Dharma Trading has adult cotton leggings, which are something like tights. Maybe a little heavier?

Alegre Fashions in Florida also carries jersey knit leggings, and their prices are good.  Here is a pair I dyed so you can see how the color took:

How much Lycra did the failures have in them? How much was too much? It could be that the non-spandex portion was nylon or polyester, which require different dyes.

Usually tights that are 90% or even 80% cotton dye well, in spite of the 10% or 20% spandex.

The tag said 90% cotton 10% lycra. I didn't get any more details. They came from Danskin.  I've tried the Dharma leggings and I really loved the way they turned out but the customer wanted footed tights. Oh well....

10% spandex/90% cotton should dye very well. A spandex content of 10% is absolutely fine.

Several possibilities:
  • The tights were mislabeled and were really 90% nylon or 90% polyester, and not cotton at all. It's rare for labels to be wrong, but sometimes it happens.
  • They were treated to be stain-resistant (which I've never heard of for tights so far—have you?). Stain resistant clothing doesn't dye well.
  • You forgot the soda ash or mistakenly mixed up something else instead of soda ash. I know this sounds stupid, but it happens more often than you would expect. A friend of mine accidentally used urea one time when she thought she was mixing up soda ash.

Or did they take some dye, but not really intensely? Maybe a very thin tights material would look paler.
