how do you get the dot like things effect like in this picture?

Two main points: thicken your dye with sodium alginate so it doesn't spread, and apply a different color to the front than to the back to get the alternating colors. In your example, yellow was applied on one side while red was applied on the other, and black was applied on one side while blue was applied on the other.

Careful tying is easier if you moisten your shirt with water, not soda ash, before you tie it. Dry shirts are harder to tie tightly, and soda ash either requires gloves or messes up your hands. You can then soak the shirt in soda ash. Alternatively, try letting the soda ash dry in the shirt before applying dye.
