I'm new here. My name is Mish. I've been lurking and reading and the amount of information is overwhelming, but so informative. Much more involved than I thought. I'm having majors probs with bleeding. Hope I can find help here. I am a yoga teacher. I create some of my own wardrobe and started to make some for retail. Here's some of my favs.

Hey there Mish--I always like the muted colors, personally. And that gorgeous splash of purple in the top picture really makes your text pop!

Hello..I've been browsing the site now for a couple days..and I've got to say, this is the most down to earth bunch of people..the site is easy to read, very informative and seems to be pretty cool!! Anyway, I've had a love for tie dyes since I can remember..I'm 32 and I couldn't imagine life w/out my tie dyes & inscense! I've done a few dyes don't have too many pics of the ones I've done but I gathered a few to share, so I figured I'd jump on & try out this whole posting & sharing bit..If all goes well I'll try to do some more..

I like your heavy use of black...and they are very black! What dye(s) are you using for it? Also amused by some of the titles in your gallery, especially "Guru Got Run Over By A Rainbow."

Some of the shirts started out black. I tied them then discharged them with bleach, stopped the bleaching, then dyed them. Got some rather interesting chemistry lessons doing it. I'm sure the twitch will go away eventually. Tom

Hi, Tom. I have been experimenting a lot this year with discharge dyeing. I was going gangbusters with bleach water last fall, then one of my shirts fell apart after being laundered. I backed away from bleach water, although I love the effect you can get with the flow of liquid. I have been using Discharge paste, and more recently dishwashing gel with bleach, of all things. But it acts as a thickened bleaching agent! I am attaching pictures of 2 recent shirts where I used the gel: The end result comes out differently on the diagonal fold than it did when I was using bleach water, but I'm getting kind of fond of it! The medallions are across the front of a tank, and I had planned to paint them with thickened dyes, but I'm leaning toward leaving them as is... Anyway, I would love to hear what you have learned, and what you recommend for lightening the shirt without damaging the fibers too much! Judy

I really LOVE the way this came out. First, I tie dyed three separate designs and then I immersion dyed canvas emerald green and black to make a thick lining. After I dyed all my materials, I sewed it all together with the help of my amazing mother. The purse is actually three layers... the tie dyed outside, an old quilt I bought at the local thrift store to give the purse support and the immersion dyed lining. By the way, I appliquéd three separate pieces on the strap... which is an eye, a heart and a peace sign. This is now my favorite piece and I use it every day!

Nice work, Lelia! I really love the second one... my colors! And I love that you were able to recycle the quilt... very resourceful!

Trust me, I'm in the thrift store at least three times a month on half price day!

Okay Tom--now I understand the blackness and the crispness. As you can tell, I haven't done much work with discharge! Ahhh...so much to learn...

Judy,
I have found the best way to keep from damaging the fibers too much is to dilute the bleach and then be patient. I'm looking for better ways to discharge. I was going to try and make a bleach solution with a thickening agent in it but dishwashing gel might be the way to go.
Maybe this should be a new topic somewhere else?
Tom
