I quizzed the lead singer from Hayseed Dixie on how his top was made (I love it) and all he could tell me was the woman who made it used marbles.

I've tried hunting out a tutorial online on how to achieve this, but with no luck.
Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or give me some quick instructions.

Here is a photo of the dye in question...

I think I have a vague idea of how it was done.
But can't put into words lol

I'll take a stab at this, at least with words.
If it was made using marbles, then the marbles were bound in diagonal lines across the shirt, fairly close together.
The marble lumps were then dyed in rainbow diagonals and the cloth in between the marbles was dyed black.
tah-dah.......
It looks like the marbles were tied into the two layers of the shirt.
I don't know if the binding would be easier using rubber bands or a running line of sinew or string.
I don't think I'm going to run right out and try this, haha.
Lotsa marbles there.............

I would use rubber bands done a couple of Ts with marbles and it was a lot easier with rubber bands. when i was paying marbles Walmart had a set of them for $5 something like 100 or so but it has been a couple of years now if you want i dont use them and could mail them if you paid shipping not sure what it would cost. there not the giants one just the little ones theres a couple of big and medium unless the kids have lost those. I did a small piece of fabric using marbles, but the results came out differently:

I used dental floss to tie around the marbles, and this was on flat-weave fabric, not cotton jersey.  I folded the fabric before tying the marbles and LWI dyeing, and you can see that the back side got less dye than the front.  I'm thinking rubber bands would have given me more of the circle design.  I'm also thinking that the dye on this shirt was applied with maybe a syringe?  Looks like a lot of work went into it!  Nice...

My thoughts...

I concur marbles are placed in evenly spaced, (probably measured and marked), diagonal
rows through both sides of the shirt, so the marbles protrude on the front where
they are then dyed in the rainbow colors. Then the shirt is dyed solid black on the back.

Cool shirt...
