This may not be the place for this, but I have a question.

Is it possible to purchase soda ash without going through the mail.  If so, what am I looking for, and where/what type of store might carry it?

Absolutely!

Run out to your pool supply company and grab a 50 pound bag for $16-18. You might be able to find smaller quantities at discount department stores during the summer season.

I never cared to spend as much in shipping as the cost of the product! Nor do I care for shipping such things clear across the country!

pool supplies,  called "pH Up" is what you need. you can find it in pool places, and also home depot, lowes etc in the pool/spa/pond supplies.
